Finding the "Phantom": Photographing the Rufous-vented Ground-Cuckoo in Costa Rica

The Phantom of the Neotropics

The Rufous-vented Ground-Cuckoo is a legend of the Neotropics. Rare, incredibly elusive, and famously shy, it has earned its reputation as a “phantom” bird. For many birdwatchers and wildlife photographers, a life-long search often ends in nothing more than a fleeting glimpse through dense vegetation.

However, in certain locations in Costa Rica, the story is different. Here, you have a unique opportunity to not only observe this bird but to capture high-quality photographs — an experience nearly impossible anywhere else in the world.

The Secret? Local Expertise

The key to this success lies with the local guides, particularly in the La Tigra region. Over time, these dedicated experts have succeeded in finding and habituating specific individuals to the presence of birders and photographers.

But don’t be fooled — finding a Ground-Cuckoo is never “easy.” It requires a level of dedication that most travelers never see.

Following the Army: The Nightly Scout

The Rufous-vented Ground-Cuckoo is a professional “ant-follower.” It specializes in tracking army ant swarms as they move across the forest floor. As the ants advance, a chaotic wave of insects and small vertebrates attempts to escape — only to run straight into the beak of the waiting Cuckoo.

Because the Cuckoo goes where the ants go, the guides must track the army ant bivouac (their temporary nest). These ants are nomadic and often move their entire colony to a new location under the cover of night.

To ensure a successful tour the next morning, local guides venture into the forest after dark to locate the new bivouac. By knowing exactly where the ants will begin their hunting excursion at dawn, they know exactly where the “phantom” will be waiting for its breakfast.

Plan Your Encounter

If you are visiting Costa Rica and this iconic species is on your bucket list, timing and local knowledge are everything. While the Cuckoo is a wild animal and never “guaranteed,” your chances skyrocket when you work with the right people.
