The first community to peacefully coexist with Pumas and Tapirs
Our inaugural initiative, Living with Pumas and Tapirs, is a pioneering project that supports the first known peaceful coexistence between a rural community — Rincón de San Josecito — and both Pumas and Baird's Tapirs.
Over the years, this remarkable community has undergone an extraordinary transformation — from hunting wildlife to protecting it — creating a unique model of coexistence between people and some of Central America’s most iconic mammals.
The problem
When young pumas leave their natal territory in search of their own space, they often arrive in nearby communities where they are feared and frequently killed.
The solution
In partnership with Corcovado Foundation, we are developing an environmental education and guide-training program across six local communities to expand this unique coexistence model to neighboring areas.
The goal is transformative: helping former hunters and other community members become trained wildlife guides and conservation ambassadors.
Get involved
We are raising $82,000 to fund the environmental education and wildlife guide-training programs.
We invite you to become part of this unique story. Every contribution helps transform fear and hunting into conservation, opportunity, and peaceful coexistence.
