Since 2015, I have dedicated myself to exploring the extraordinary birds and wildlife of La Tigra and its surrounding wilderness. I am fortunate to live among some of Costa Rica’s most iconic species, from the vibrant Tody Motmot and Lattice-tailed Trogon to the rare Bare-necked Umbrellabird and the elusive Rufous-vented Ground Cuckoo. It would be a privilege to share my passion and deep local knowledge of this magical region with you.

Rufous-vented Ground Cuckoo tour

An exceptional guide who truly goes the extra mile

This was one of the very best tours I’ve done in Costa Rica, and one I’ll remember fondly for a long time. Maylor is both a fantastic guide and one of the nicest people I’ve met on my trip. Even before the tour, he was super communicative, asking about my target species to tailor the itinerary and heading out to scout suitable locations for the cuckoo I was hoping to see. That level of care and effort really set the tone for the whole experience. We stopped at several hotspots along the way, which proved extremely productive. Maylor helped me find some incredible lifers, including umbrellabirds, a group of lattice-tailed trogons and many more. Canopy San Luis was another highlight: watching an army ant swarm up close, with so many species of antbirds following it, was amazing. Maylor has a great eye for spotting birds: I could have followed the same route on my own and missed almost everything :) He’s also a great photographer, so he can help you set up with the best light and angles, which made a real difference for me. Above all, it was simply a pleasure to spend the day with someone so kind, passionate about wildlife and knowledgeable about the region. He went out of his way to help me find the species I was interested in, which I am really grateful for. If you’re planning a trip to Costa Rica, keep the La Tigra area on your radar and get in touch with Maylor. You won’t find a better guide to show you what the region has to offer.
