About this tour

Macaw Lodge is strategically located within one of Costa Rica’s most biodiverse regions, where the dry forests of the Pacific lowlands transition into the humid forests of the Central Pacific and connect with the foothills of the Turrubares Mountains. This unique convergence of ecosystems, combined with an elevational gradient from lowland forests to higher elevations, creates exceptional habitat diversity and supports more than 350 species of resident and migratory birds. During this 2.5-hour guided birdwatching experience, guests have the opportunity to observe some of the region’s most iconic species, including the magnificent Scarlet Macaw, the elusive Sunbittern, the highly sought-after Great Tinamou, as well as the Yellow-throated Toucan, Fiery-billed Aracari, Orange-collared Manakin, and Amazon Kingfisher. Accompanied by an experienced naturalist guide, participants will explore the lodge’s trails, gardens, wetlands, and forest edges while learning to locate and identify bird species. Along the way, the guide shares insights into bird behavior, ecology, and the vital role these species play in maintaining the balance of tropical ecosystems. This tour is ideal for both beginner birders and experienced enthusiasts seeking to discover the extraordinary avian diversity of the Carara–Turrubares region.
